Understanding the Industry
My father’s understanding of the human eye has always impressed me.
When it comes to contact lenses and eye health in general, my dad knows his stuff.
Talking to him, you might even think that he’s an optometrist or some kind of eye care practitioner.
He isn’t.
But his knowledge comes from years of working at CooperVision (one of the biggest contact lens manufacturers) and surrounding himself with ophthalmologists and experts.
When you’re developing a product for an industry – especially the healthcare industry – it’s important that you become well versed in that field. Understanding every aspect of how the product will benefit the public is just part of good design.
This year, I’m celebrating the anniversary of my dad’s product. His Visonic Dome contact lens cleaner is 31 this year.
For all intents and purposes, there’s really no need for me to understand the physiology of the human eye like he does. There’s no reason to read countless studies about contact lens wearer hygiene compliance like he did. Understanding the different contact lens types and materials, the solutions and cleaners… None of that really matters.
Because he did all of that already. His design is totally production-ready. There’s very little that will change between what he created in 1989 and this recreation now in 2020.
But as I get ready to celebrate his achievement, learning more about the industry that he worked in just feels… right.
And y’know what? Learning about eye care is pretty fun, too.

Maybe we’ll learn something together!
